Based on the recent news from the Province and by way of the Return to Train and Return to Play Plans from Baseball Alberta, NEZ Baseball and the Edmonton Padres are excited to get the players and coaches back on the fields. In order to comply with all guidelines and maintain manageable steps in relaunching baseball in our region, a phased-in approach has been planned. The health and safety of our players, coaches, volunteers and families remains top priority.
In Phase 1, 18U AAA, 15U AAA, 13U AAA and 13U AA teams have been contacted about re-registration for this new season. These teams had been set in March during tryouts before COVID-19 forced a suspension of sanctioned baseball activities which had been in place until now. These teams will start practicing this week following the direction of the Padres Return to Train & Play Plan. Four weeks of structured practices with the intention of getting players back into game condition will take place and instructional intra-squad type games will be permitted after July 1, as per the Baseball Alberta Return to Play Plan.
In Phase 2, 18U AA, 15U AA and 11U AA players will re-register during the week of June 22 and will be back on the field during the week of June 29. Following registration closing on June 27, families will receive a welcome email with an invitation to attend a mandatory Zoom meeting to outline the Padres Return to Train & Play Program. Coaches will also have a preseason meeting to ensure understanding and compliance with the Return to Train & Play documents. 18U AA and 15U AA will conduct tryouts to create teams in the first week back (rosters set by July 5), while 11U AA will begin practices. All teams will be practicing by the week of July 6 with a focus on preparing players for game play.

RETURN TO PLAY
Based on the Baseball Alberta Return to Play Plan, we anticipate being able to play games against local competition beginning on or after July 15. We have been in contact with the other Zone 6 Edmonton associations to discuss partnering on this when it has been approved (SEEBA at AAA and EABA, SJP and SWEMBA at AA). We also anticipate the potential of playing teams in Zone 5 Surrounding Edmonton if all continues to progress as planned (Parkland, St. Albert and Sherwood Park at AAA and Parkland, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Leduc and Beaumont at AA).
As more information becomes available and as restrictions continue to relax, NEZ Baseball is considering grassroots programs for younger players in August. Summer Day Camps and an Instructional House League are programs that may be possible. More information will be made available by NEZ Baseball when it is available.
